39. OZMA
February 13, 2025
The Golden Guide to Stars and the Golden Guide to Weather are two books I was drawn to as a child. So, it’s fitting that The Weather Channel alerted me of the bright star, Regulus, yesterday morning. Introduced as the Full Snow Moon’s co-star, it’s the heart of the lion (Leo) and one of the four “Royal Stars” that governed fate. I want to explain that it’s natural to look at the sky for patterns and make predictions. But, that’s not my role. I’m here to show how to follow signs, interpret their meaning, and use them to our advantage.
For example, as I struggled to describe the feeling of synchronicity once more, I decided to listen to a song by Ozma. A band I hadn’t listened to since the early 2000s. Their song, “Domino Effect,” led me to Princess Ozma, who appears in the second Oz book, The Marvelous Land of Oz. The author, L. Frank Baum wrote fourteen books in the series and framed them as though he received the adventures of Dorothy and Princess Ozma through a wireless telegraph. This interested me because I’ve suspected that the magic we’re taught to believe in as children is real. It’s why I looked up The Wizard of Oz on August 11, 2020. Though, I still can’t explain what possessed me to do so the day ruby slippers were outside my home. Curious to know what else lies in Oz, I peeked at the third book, Ozma of Oz. Dorothy saves the royal family by correctly selecting one of the young princes. This week, I selected stars as if they were tarot cards: Horologium (the clock), Achernar, belonging to Eridanus (completion of the journey), and Regulus (little king or prince). Somehow, it mirrors Dorothy’s journey and brings forth a feeling of incredible luck, perfect timing, and the belief of being guided.
